all Motörhead, all day

lemmy autograph Had a strange Motörhead craving today... hence my Lemmy autographed napkin. Weird memory, fun times, and crasy lyrics rolling through my brain... (that's the way I like it, baby. I don't want to live forever...)
front squats 30#dbs: 6, 5, 5, 4
the evil pushup row/burpee/push press combo (with some modifications toward the end). 15#dbs 3x 5reps each. Time: 5:6.44
whoa. calling dr. rock.

an unexpected free Saturday...

tomato I had originally planned to do to San Jacinto Peak today. Unfortunately, my partner in crime pulled a hammy playing softball yesterday and I didn't want to go alone, so the outing was nixed. I spent most of the day doing errands and planting tomatoes and herbs.... hoping against hope that my brown thumb had taken a hike of its own.

Also today:
Squats 20#dbs: 10, 10, 10
Bent rows 30#dbs / pushups: 10/10, 810, 8/10
Windmill 12kg / planks: 10/30sec, 8/30sec, 8/30sec

3 sets 7 reps each press(15#dbs)/burpees: 3:00.33
Admittedly, I cheated a bit. Some of the burpees were plain ole squat thrusts.

oh, go take a hike

the trail Today I thought I'd take advantage of our break in the heat wave (it is supposed to get gross again on Saturday), and spend some time outdoors. I hiked up to Elysian Park, and burnt off some of the 'crappy-day-in-the-market' frustration on some fun, yummy hills.
That 's it for today, though. I'm beat.

40/40 burpees/jump squats

I guesstimated about 10 minutes for this. And I would have bet the over...
But I got it in at 6:42.35
The bar is set for next year...

hooray! i'm 40 today!

catalina Busy weekend - boats, kayaks, a hike, dinner party, cocktails, a killer massage (by this blind guy who amazingly worked out every last knot... kinda like by braille), crab fest (a party with food... not a bitch session) at the hungry cat, and of course, this:
Deadlifts 30# dbs : 10, 10, 10
Bent Row 30# dbs / pushup: 8/10, 7/10, 8/10
Press 20# dbs / burpees: 10/6, 9/6, 8/6
Windmill 12kg / plank: 8/30sec, 6/30sec, 6/30sec
3 min Tabata: jump squat/rev lunge

All in all, a damn good way to start the next decade.

this is Boston, NOT L.A....

Basket

Oh. Right. Still in L.A. Silly me.
A shout out to my Celtics, and the Boston Massacre. Woo HOO!
It almost feels like the late 1980s again... although the team shorts were a lot shorter then. Ahh, the good old days. But, really, life is a hell of a lot better now. Yeah.
Except for the shorts.

Deadlift 30#dbs: 10, 10, 10
Bent Rows 30#dbs / pushups: 10/10, 8/10, 7/10

obsessed?

Found this image on the web (E. Phillips - Travel-Images.com) - as I compile more info, and get more details about the logistics of the North Pole thing, I'm even more enthused, and am starting to get carried away (like I do)...
oy vey.

Today's workout:
Squats 20#dbs: 10, 10, 10
Bent Row 30#dbs / pushups: 10/10, 8/10, 8/10
Windmill 25#/ plank: 10/30sec, 8/30sec, 8/30sec

3 sets, 7 reps each press20#dbs,15,15/burpee. Completed in 3:19.45
got all the way through. couldn't handle the weight on set 2 so switched down. form on the burpees is frankly embarrassing. good thing I don't have an audience.

quickie

Short and sweet today (the log, that is), with no pretty pics... I got places to be. :)
Felt like I couldn't quite get it together, and it was more of a mental challenge.
I did get through it though.
Deadlift 30#dbs: 10, 10, 10
Bent Row 30#dbs / Pushup: 8/10, 7/10, 8/10
OH Press 20#dbs / burpee: 8/6, 8/6, 9/6
Windmill 25# / Plank: 8/20sec, 6/20sec, 6/20sec

And 2 minutes of the Tabata, squat jumps and reverse lunges. I kinda improvised, since our video clips never made the connect.... so I think it must have been o.k., 'cause it was hardafukinuff.

next stop, Longyearbyen?

Petermann Island, Antarctic Peninsula
I hooked up with some friends yesterday, who I originally met in Antarctica. After a delightful time reminiscing (and some shameless gossiping about the expedition team), I left feeling really nostalgic for the polar region, and that it was time to plan a new trip. Through a series of tangential conversations, emotions and notions, an idea is born. A rockin' one... that sends soft tingles down my spine every time I think about it. Of course, its currently out of reach (both physically and financially), but where there's a will, there's usually a way... It might be a 2010 event, but anticipation and preparation makes it even more exciting.
So - the goal is to ski/dogsled to the North Pole (uh huh, mom. still crazy). And while it is still the stuff of fantasy, the seed has been planted. I can work on growing the funds and training (also playing the lottery, perhaps?)
Qualifications according to one outfitter: This expedition is for people who are in good shape, and who are eager to push themselves physically and mentally. You will need to have very good cardiovascular endurance and the ability to work with heavy dogsleds for several hours at a time. You must also be able to travel on skis. Towards the end of the day when we stop dogsledding & skiing, it is critical that you have the energy reserves to set up camp, melt snow for hot tea or cocoa, and make dinner. Most importantly you need to be able to regulate your body temperature so that you do not get too cold, or too hot while you are on the move.
Yippee! Not sure how one would manage the body temp regulation, though (aside from advanced meditation techniques...)
Anyhoo. Back to reality and today's workout:
Squats 15#dbs: 10, 10, 10
Bent Row 30#dbs / Pushup: 10/10, 6/10, 8/10
OH Press 20#dbs / Burpee: 10/6, 8/6, 8/6
Windmill 25# / Plank: 7/20sec, 6/20sec, 7/25sec

10 minutes: completed 3 complete sets TGU and 2 sets swings.
5 ea.side TGU (10#) / 10 kb swings (8kg).
I had to open my big mouth about trying the get ups, huh? That'll learn me. Actually, they were kind of fun once I got in a groove. Very tempting to stay on the ground for an extra beat or two, though.

anklage nr. 5

approaching denmarknot quite a longshoreman.... but, yeah. a 4letter word (or two) may have slipped out

Deadlifts 30#dbs: 10, 10, 10

Bent-over rows 25,25,30#dbs/pushups: 10/10, 10/10, 8/9

windmills 20,25,25#db/planks: 10/20sec, 7/20sec, 8/20sec

and the last little doozy took 3:01:and change
Overhead press 15#db/burpees 7/7, 7/7/, 7/4.5

my friends the burpees were slow, as you can tell by the time. at number 5 on the last set, my feet shot out and refused to move. so I stopped. thank goodness for the bad aggro german rap song that was playing during the whole set... definitely helpful in getting as far as I did.

of mice and kettlebells

Lucky
Did some kettlebell intervals for about 20 minutes or so, just for fun...
not very structured, and the process was interrupted. I heard a "squeak, squeak, SLAM! squeak, squeak, SLAM!", and went to the kitchen to investigate. Lucky was sitting there with creature in his jaws, still squeaking. (mouse or baby rat, I'm not entirely sure.... I feel better calling it a mouse...) That, of course, sent me running to the neighbor's for assistance, and I lost complete track of the exercises. I DID get a little bit in, though.
Good kitty.

beer and snickers.

delivering the beer...
Been thinking about 'strength', and what it means to me. I can't help but consider porters, and wonder if I'd ever be able to carry such a load for hours (or days) in the mountains. (definitely not looking to change professions... just keeping things in perspective.) This guy's load contains beer and snickers. hmmm. Breakfast of champions? haha.

today:

Squats 15#db: 10, 10, 10

Bent-over rows 25#db/pushups: 10/10, 10/10, 10/10

Overhead press 15#db/burpees: 10/6, 10/6, 10/6

windmills 20#db/planks: 10/20sec, 8/20sec, 8/20sec

30 second rest

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

super early morning

... dug up this photograph (not mine, obviously) - an old Halsman image of Marilyn. Pretty great.

Anyway, I knew this would be the only opportunity to move today. So I am up at the buttcrack of dawn.
Yawn.

(and - I'm not entirely clear on frequency or duration of this little drill, so I'm doing every other day....)

deadlifts 30#dbs: 10, 10, 10
bent-over rows 25#dbs/pushups: 10/10, 10/8, 8/10
overhead press 15#dbs/burpees: 10/6, 10/6, 10/6

windmills 20#db/planks: 8/20sec, 8/20sec, 8/20sec

(rest=30 seconds)
happy hump day!
