tragedy on K2

Butter candlesOn August 1 there was a huge avalanche on K2, making it the deadliest day ever on the mountain. 22 climbers were attempting the summit. Many were swept to their deaths, and others trapped in the death zone. Two Nepalese climbers were killed attempting to rescue others. 11 are presumed dead. When climbing K2, a mountain considered more challenging than Everest, as one local bluntly put it, "You're missing, you're dead."

Sad, sad news, that is also thought provoking. These folks engaged in what they knew to be high risk adventure. Arguably, that is part of the thrill. Many might say that is a selfish and/or irresponsible pursuit. Then again, perhaps one could say they lived life to the fullest, participating in activity that made them fully "alive", until the very last moment.

Regardless, it is a tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers go out to their families, and to the survivors. I can't begin to imagine what it must be like for them.

And later today for me: LAX to ORD. No dangerous mountains on the agenda. The biggest risk ahead for me is a probable volleyball game in the pool with a bunch of cheaters. :)

Bent row/high pull (30#dbs): 8/8, 8/8, 8/8 (last 8 were wicked hard!)
Burpee/clean/press (15#dbs): 25 in 3:52 (again - guess it wasn't fluke)

side note: my penguin is on the jumpbecause.com page!
